U.S. Senate Continues to Debate Reconciliation Bill Behind Closed Doors
The Situation Report | June 9, 2025
The United States Senate is expected to release the “non-controversial” portions of the Reconciliation bill this week. It is expected that the Medicaid, Medicare and Tax Cut portions of the bill will be released later this week or early next week. Some Medicare cuts have been identified as waste fraud and abuse.
The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the bill will increase the deficit by $2.3 trillion over the next decade. Additionally, several House Members who voted for the bill during the first round, have said they will oppose the bill unless further reductions to federal spending and deficit spending are made in the Senate version. As a reminder, once the Senate passes their version, the House will need to vote on it again for final approval. Given the small majorities held in the House and Senate, it is still uncertain if the bill can gain final approval.
President Trump has said repeatedly he wants to sign the bill prior to July 4th. With three weeks remaining until that deadline both the House and Senate will be working overtime to try and accomplish passage of the bill.
